The Apex Committee of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced significant measures to restore peace in Kurram district. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur at the CM House in Peshawar, was attended by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Corps Commander Peshawar, Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Inspector General of Police, and other senior officials.
Voluntary Surrender of Weapons
The committee decided that both parties involved in the Kurram conflict would voluntarily surrender their weapons under a government-mediated agreement. The parties have been given 15 days to devise a plan for the handover, with a deadline set for February 1 to hand over all arms to the administration.
Demolition of Bunkers
Following the collection of weapons, all bunkers in the region will be dismantled after the February 1 deadline. This measure aims to ensure long-term peace and stability in the area.
Improved Transportation: Ground and Air Access
The committee resolved to temporarily open Kurram’s ground routes to facilitate public movement while ensuring security through joint patrols by the police and Frontier Corps. Additionally, a special air service will be launched in emergencies, with helicopters provided by federal and provincial governments.
Tackling Sectarian Hate Speech
To curb sectarian tensions, the committee directed the closure of all social media accounts spreading hate and incitement. Both parties were urged to refrain from violent actions, as any disturbances could lead to the re-closure of ground routes by the administration.
National Importance of the Kurram Conflict
The statement issued after the meeting emphasized that the Kurram issue is not merely regional but a matter of national significance. It condemned attempts by political leaders to exploit the sensitive situation for political gains. Allegations regarding the deaths of children in the area were dismissed as baseless, with assurances that both federal and provincial governments, along with relevant agencies, are united in resolving the matter.
Rising Terrorist Activity and Potential Relocation
The meeting also reviewed the escalating terrorist activities in Tirah and Jani Khel. To safeguard lives and property, temporary relocation of residents from affected areas is under consideration. The administration urged locals to assist in identifying and removing miscreants from their communities to avoid any potential harm.
