Türkiye Reopens Embassy in Syria After 12 Years

Türkiye has decided to reopen its embassy in Syria after 12 years. According to Arab media, Turkish Foreign Minister announced that Burhan Korauglu, Türkiye’s ambassador to Mauritania, has been appointed as the chargé d’affaires for the Damascus embassy.

State broadcaster TRT reported that Burhan Korauglu and his team have already left for Damascus, and the embassy has officially resumed its operations. The Turkish embassy in Damascus was previously active but ceased its operations in 2012 due to deteriorating conditions.

During the conflict, Türkiye maintained ties with armed opposition groups against Bashar al-Assad’s government and provided them with financial support. Meanwhile, Syria’s Consulate General in Istanbul continued to function.

It is noteworthy that on December 8, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule came to an end as rebels declared victory in Damascus. Following the announcement on state TV, thousands of people celebrated in the city’s central Umayyad Square. The rebels confirmed Assad’s downfall and called for the protection of state property in Syria.
