Baghdad: Iraqi military officials, citing the Ministerial Council for National Security, have denied claims that Iran is using Iraqi territory to launch attacks against Israel. They labeled such reports as baseless and attempts to justify hostility toward Israel, stating that such allegations insult Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Iraqi authorities emphasized that, in light of heightened regional tensions, they would not allow their land to be used for attacks or retaliatory actions. The clarification comes amidst reports of Iran’s recent warnings to Israel in response to Israeli strikes, sparking speculation that Iraq could be a staging ground for Iranian actions.
The statement follows a report by a U.S.-based news site quoting Israeli intelligence sources who claimed that Iran could launch retaliatory strikes on Israel from Iraq. An Israeli newspaper also reported that Israel has identified potential targets in Iraq and may send a warning to Baghdad if Iranian-backed factions continue to pose threats from Iraqi soil.
Unnamed officials reportedly stated that satellites have been tracking Tehran’s activities, including the transfer of ballistic missiles and equipment to Iraq, potentially for use in attacks against Israel. According to these reports, Israel has been monitoring sites in Iraq and has warned Baghdad to prevent such factions from using Iraqi territory for hostile actions.
In a recent incident, Iraqi factions claimed responsibility for two separate drone attacks targeting Israeli military installations. They announced that they had struck two significant targets in Haifa and launched drone strikes in southern Israel, according to statements made on Wednesday.
