Under a new “Winter Package,” electricity prices in Pakistan are likely to decrease by up to PKR 8 per unit for the upcoming three months.
According to sources, the Winter Package aims to boost electricity consumption during the winter by providing relief to consumers. Joint working teams from the Power Division, Ministry of Finance, and other agencies are collaborating on this package. The final approval of the Winter Package is contingent on IMF clearance, as three potential pricing options are currently under consideration.
Additionally, sources revealed that the package might be limited to industrial consumers, with a targeted reduction of up to PKR 20 per unit if only this sector benefits. The proposed timeframe for the Winter Package is December through February 2025, although an alternative suggestion could extend it to April.
Officials highlight that the primary objective of the Winter Package is to offer relief specifically to industrial users. Discussions with IMF officials are underway to finalize the details. A formal request for the Winter Package will be submitted to NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority) if IMF approval is obtained. Afterward, the package will require approval from the federal cabinet.
