Karachi’s electricity consumers may receive a minor relief as a 27-paisa per unit reduction in electricity prices is expected. K-Electric has submitted a request to NEPRA under the October monthly fuel adjustment, and a hearing is scheduled for today.
If approved, Karachi consumers will collectively benefit from a relief of Rs. 460 million. However, this relief appears minor as the federal government recently increased electricity prices by 20 paisa per unit nationwide, including Karachi.
According to NEPRA’s notification, the 20-paisa increase was made under the first quarterly adjustment of the current fiscal year, imposing an additional burden of Rs. 1.18 billion on electricity consumers.
The increase will be effective for one month in December 2024. Lifeline and prepaid users are exempt from this adjustment, and the quarterly adjustment will not apply to extra electricity usage under the Winter Package.
It is noteworthy that the recovery of the last fiscal year’s quarterly adjustment, which was Rs. 1.74 per unit, concluded in November.
