The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced an 18 paisa per unit reduction in electricity rates for Karachi consumers under the monthly adjustment mechanism.
According to NEPRA’s notification for September 2024’s monthly adjustment, this relief will be reflected in the electricity bills for December 2024. However, it will not apply to consumers using less than 300 units per month.
K-Electric had requested a 16 paisa per unit reduction for September 2024, which amounts to a total financial impact of approximately Rs. 247 million.
It is pertinent to mention that recently, business and industrial groups criticized the government for excluding net metering consumers from the winter package. They demanded that K-Electric be directed to pass on the benefits of the winter package to Karachi’s residents.
According to a report by Dawn, consumers raised concerns during a public hearing on the quarterly winter package, questioning the implementation of reduced rates. They argued that nearly 20 days had already passed without any benefits being provided to the consumers.
