Extension of Army Chief’s Tenure: Reports of Key Meeting Between PTI and JUI-F

Islamabad (Report) Discussions about extending the tenure of Pakistan’s military chiefs and increasing the number of judges in the judiciary have led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to arrange a significant meeting with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F). Reliable sources reveal that a high-level PTI delegation, led by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali, is scheduled to meet JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman today.

The PTI delegation is expected to arrive at Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s residence this afternoon. During the meeting, they will engage in detailed discussions about the recently passed amendments and consider a strategic course of action moving forward. This comes a day after Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani signed bills, approved by both houses of Parliament, that extend the service tenures of military heads and increase the judiciary’s capacity.

Following the President’s signature, the six amendment bills have now become law and have been sent for official gazette notification. Parliament approved the bills on Monday, extending the terms of the Army, Navy, and Air Force chiefs from three to five years. Additionally, both the Senate and National Assembly passed a bill to raise the number of Supreme Court judges to 34 and Islamabad High Court judges to 12, which has also received presidential approval.
